about

I tried not to directly address the coronavirus pandemic in most of the songs I wrote in 2020, even though it loomed extremely large over the course of the year. As I mentioned earlier, I like to utilize music as a means of escape and if anything needed escaping from it was covid. This track was written near the end of the year and I found myself in a bit of a reflective mood, so it seemed like it was time to make a passing acknowledgement of it. This definitely feels like it's in conversation with some of the other songs as I see some similar themes popping up such as wanting to fly and wanting to get up and get away. There was a lot of heavy stuff happening, but ultimately I do feel hopeful.

I don't know the meaning of life and neither does anyone else, but it just seems wrong to me that we're all supposed to just hate each other and bicker and fight all the time. Maybe I'm wrong and that actually is the purpose of existence. Human history seems to suggest that it is, but if that's the case then this is a profoundly stupid world and a profoundly stupid reality and I don't think I want to be a part of it. I'm more inclined to believe that the things that divide us are actually a challenge that we're meant to rise up to meet, overcome, and transcend so that we can move forward, evolve, and ascend to our fullest potential. Or at least that's the world that I want to live in.

lyrics

There was a time not so long ago
When you could just pick up and go
Pretty much anywhere you'd want to go

But that was in a different age
Before the year of the plague
Uncertainty was exciting not something to fear

And I traveled over the ocean
Just to see what all lay over there
I wandered across many borders
Yes I used to sail through the air

Year of the plague's got me twisted and flailing
Tired of the lies and I'm tired of the failing
And after all these years I still don't know the reason why we're here
But I...
I...
I...

Just can't believe we were put here
To hate each other or feel fear
So please don't despair
